Charging while shopping can turn an ordinary supermarket visit into a useful energy top-up. It works best when the charger’s access rules, your car’s charging power and the length of your shop fit together. A supermarket logo alone does not establish the price, payment method or permission to stay after closing.

Why the payment method matters

A charger at a supermarket may be operated by the retailer or a separate charging company. Paying in the retailer’s app, on a direct-payment page or with a roaming card can create different contracts. Check the exact connector and the tariff shown by the method you intend to use.

Check the instructions at the exact store: supported payment methods, access and prices can differ between locations. The price shown through your charging account applies to that payment route. Do not infer the conditions of one store from another store in the same chain.

How much energy can a shopping stop add?

AC: calculate from the car’s limit

An illustrative 30-minute stop at an average 11 kW delivers about 5.5 kWh at the relevant measurement point. The energy actually stored in the battery may be lower. At a hypothetical driving consumption of 18 kWh/100 km, 5.5 kWh corresponds to roughly 31 km before accounting for those losses and different driving conditions.

The same stop is less useful if the vehicle only accepts single-phase AC at a lower rate. Look up your exact model rather than assuming the 22 kW label on a post describes what your car will receive.

DC: the battery decides the pace

A DC point can add more energy during a short shop, but power falls or varies with battery conditions and state of charge. Avoid calculating the entire session from the charger’s peak rating. See AC, DC and HPC for the difference.

Parking permission is a separate check

Read the entrance signs as well as the charger. Customer parking, maximum stay and access outside business hours may be restricted. A session that continues technically is not proof you may leave the vehicle there. Plan to finish shopping and move the car within the permitted parking time.

Save a receipt if the parking operator asks customers to demonstrate their visit. Do not rely on other drivers’ experiences at a different branch as permission at yours.

Compare a promotion with your normal routine

A short-term discount can be valuable, but only for eligible sessions during its validity. Calculate the final energy cost, any detour and possible time fees. A special trip to obtain a small amount of discounted electricity may save less than expected.

A practical first-visit checklist

Check the branch, operator, connector, payment method and parking limit before connecting. Confirm energy is flowing before entering the shop and set a reminder that leaves time to return.
