Plug & Charge vs Autocharge: What Is the Difference?

Logo Here

Plug & Charge and Autocharge can both start charging after you connect the cable, but they are not the same system. Compatibility and setup differ. Most importantly, automatic authorisation uses an associated charging account; it does not automatically compare prices and select the cheapest available tariff.

What is Plug & Charge?

CharIN’s technical overview describes automated identification and billing based on ISO 15118 interfaces and a secure trust infrastructure. The vehicle, charging equipment and service must support the relevant implementation. For the driver, the key check is whether the car and contract are actually enabled, not just whether a brochure mentions the standard.

Treat “Plug & Charge ready” as a prompt to verify the remaining requirements. Software versions, account setup and supported stations can matter. Ask the vehicle manufacturer and charging provider for the current procedure for your exact model and contract.

What is Autocharge?

Autocharge links a compatible vehicle’s charging-session identity to an account in a provider’s system. It differs from certificate-based Plug & Charge. Vehicle compatibility, activation and supported stations must all match. Enabling the function in one system does not establish that it works across every network.

From a user’s perspective, compare where the feature works, which account pays and how to disable it. The convenient behaviour at the cable can look similar even though the underlying system differs.

Compare four practical questions

Is my exact car supported?

Check the model, model year, software and battery configuration where the provider distinguishes them. Do not assume all cars sharing a brand badge behave identically.

Where does it work?

Look for explicit support at the selected station. A roaming partnership that accepts your card does not automatically extend automatic authentication.

Which tariff pays?

Identify the account or contract connected to the vehicle. Check its station price before plugging in. If you want a different payment route, follow the provider’s instructions for selecting it; do not assume tapping another card after an automatic start changes an ongoing session.

How can I remove access?

Learn the deactivation process before selling the vehicle, returning a rental or changing a company-car assignment. A convenient automatic payment link should not remain associated with the wrong driver.

Test at a familiar location first

Complete setup while parked and with a backup payment method available. At a supported site, verify that the intended account started the session, then check the receipt. This one controlled test can expose an incomplete activation or unexpected billing route before a long journey.

Keep a record of which networks you enabled. If automatic charging later fails, first distinguish an account problem from a connection problem. Our session-start checklist explains that sequence.

Decide whether convenience is worth the linked tariff

Automatic charging is valuable when it reduces friction at the stations you regularly use. It is less helpful if the associated price is unsuitable for your routine. Compare the total cost using the existing charging-price guide, then choose knowingly.

Frequently asked questions

Does Plug & Charge mean charging is free?

No. It automates identification and billing through a supported contract. The contract’s applicable price still matters.

Does Autocharge replace every charging card?

No. It can simplify supported sessions, but an alternative remains useful where the feature is unavailable or setup fails.

Can automatic charging choose the cheapest account?

Do not assume so. Check the linked contract and the provider’s supported selection process before starting.
