Charging Card Not Working? Check Activation and Roaming First

If a charging card is rejected, first check whether it is activated, linked to a usable account and accepted at that exact connector. A station appearing on a map is not sufficient proof that your card can start it. Roaming enables access through another provider, but does not guarantee every payment method at every site.
Understand the two companies involved
The charge point operator runs the station. Your mobility service provider manages your charging account and bill. A roaming arrangement connects them. When authorisation fails, the problem can sit with the card, account, acceptance relationship or communication between systems.
Do not diagnose the entire network from one rejected reader. First establish whether the error means “card unknown”, “payment problem”, “connector unavailable” or simply “try again”. Photograph the message and note the time.
Check activation and account status
Open your provider’s account settings and verify that the physical card is the one registered. A replacement card may have a different identifier, while an old card may have been disabled. Check whether any activation step or payment update remains incomplete.
Receiving a card and being ready to charge are separate steps. Check whether the card is activated, attached to the right account and accepted at the selected connector. App access at a station does not automatically prove that the physical card is accepted there too.
Check the exact point, not just the location
A charging park can contain multiple operators, different equipment or connectors with different capabilities. Match the EVSE or connector ID in the app to the label on the equipment. Remove filters that hide access details and look for the supported authentication methods.
A useful diagnostic sequence
If the app can start the same connector but the card cannot, focus on card activation, reader support or card-specific access.
If neither method works and the connector is shown as unavailable, focus on station status and operator support.
If direct payment works but your provider does not, investigate the account or roaming route.
If the card fails at unrelated working stations, ask your provider to check its status.
These patterns narrow the problem; they are not proof of its cause. Avoid repeatedly authorising different connectors, because you could start a session at the wrong bay.
Choose a fallback that actually changes something
An accepted app, a direct payment terminal or another reachable operator can help. Merely trying a second card with the same unavailable access path may not. Read the fallback price before accepting it; it need not match your normal tariff.
Our guide to charging without an app explains direct payment. If your card is accepted but the car still does not charge, move to the separate session-start checklist.
Give support the evidence it needs
Share the station and connector ID, timestamp, provider, displayed error and whether app or direct payment worked. Use official support channels and do not send full card-payment details in public posts. The station operator can investigate the reader or equipment; your provider can investigate your account and roaming authorisation.
Before a long trip, test your primary card and keep a realistic backup location. Choosing a card without recurring fees can be useful for occasional backup use, but only after checking actual acceptance.

Frequently asked questions
Does a charger on a map automatically accept my card?
No. A map may show locations for discovery even when your account cannot start them. Check connector-level payment and access details.
Does an RFID card work without mobile reception?
It can work without your phone being online, but the station and authorisation systems must still support the session. It is not an offline guarantee.
Will another app use the same price?
Not necessarily. A different app or card can mean a different contract. Confirm its price before starting.
